Skater Sister eBook HD Marychild

What’s it like to have a famous sister—and always live in her shadow? Just being 14 is bad enough, what with starting a new school, being practically the only person without a cell phone, and not being recognized as the great artist you really are. But imagine having an older sister who constantly steals the spotlight, who’s a likely candidate for a figure skating gold medal in the 2014 Winter Olympics, and who somehow finds the time to be after the same guy you are. Be prepared to laugh, be prepared to cry, as feisty Karen Fenstermacher comes to grips with sibling rivalry and first romance in Skater Sister.
Heartwarming fiction for tweens, older girls, their families, and anyone who loves figure skating.

Skater Sister eBook HD Marychild Reviews
Living in the shadow of another is no fun, no matter what age you are. In Skater Sister the author presents a very realistic picture of what life is like for a girl with an accomplished older sister as she faces the trials and tribulations of ninth grade. Characters are well developed, and the plot rings true. Nice job, H.D. Marychild!
Very enjoyable story - I couldn't put it down. The characters are very easy to identify with - both sisters. This book is for girls interested in skating, art, navigating high school, sibling relationships, boys and the challenging and wonderful process of becoming your own person. It is is a book with heart and humor. I highly recommend!
This is a very well written book with interesting and complex characters that holds your attention all the way through. Growing up these days is tougher than ever and this book sheds some light on the complexities of sibling relationships and young romantic entanglements. With some Olympic excitement added to the plot, it makes for a fun and engaging read.
I wanted to get this book for 2 of my nieces and thought I'd give it a quick read first. At first I just thought it was a cute story, I actually laughed out loud and got a little teary at times. It wasn't until a day or 2 later that it hit me, this reminds me of my sister! Ok, neither of us was a figure skater or artist, but the competiveness of sister vs. sister was spot on. If you have a sister you can totally relate to this story, no matter your age. I can't wait for my sister and nieces to read this! The characters are realistic and stay with you even after you finish the book.
Although I am not a member of what I suspect is the author's target demographic, this book was strongly recommended to me by two people whose literary judgment I trust. They didn't steer me wrong. For the first time in many years, I stayed up all night to finish the book. It was that good. The author makes her characters very, very real, and the dialogue (both interior and exterior) is terrific. I loved the distinctive point of view, that of a girl who has always lived in the shadow of a renowned older sibling. It's certainly an interesting and novel perspective. I also appreciated the fact that at one point, I was sure I knew what was going to happen next (and a little disappointed that I had been able to guess it so easily). Not to worry, the author pulled the rug out from underneath me shortly thereafter. I strongly recommend this book. I can't find any other books by this (apparently first-time) author, but I would certainly read anything else she writes.
"Skater Sister" is a heart-warming coming-of -age story for teen readers. It begins when Karen Fensternmacher enters grade nine, the exciting transition overshadowed by her sister Penny's achievements academically and as a figure skating champion whose recognized as an Olympic medal hopeful. But Karen is not without talent; a budding artist, her creativity begins to be recognized. As she emerges from her feeling of inferiority, finding not only her own identity but romance, Karen discovers that her sister is not as perfect as she thought when facing a crushing defeat.
This enthralling narrative is set against the 2014 Winter Olympic trials and ends dramatically with the Ladies Figure Skating competition in Sochi. The plot is well-written and progresses steadily as the two talented siblings clash. This is a story of hope, love, friendship, kindness and loyalty amid jealousy, contention and seeming defeat. It brings messages about the strength of family bonds, about sibling rivalry, discovering self-worth and being valued for your own unique talent.
The characters are realistic with all their strengths and weaknesses. Karen is a typical teen endowed with artistic talent, but who struggles with self-esteem and is insecure living in her well-known sister's shadow. Penny Fensternmacker a born performer is self-confident, imperious and poised until she faces a crushing defeat. Of Karen's classmates, William Chang is a super intelligent, nice teen who's shy and nervous until an invitation to a Sadie Hawkins dance brings changes to his personality, while Jacob (Jake)Mannheimer is confident, talented and smart, until one night of drinking damages a coveted relationship. All these characters and more add to the energy and depth of this wonderful narrative.
"Skater Sister is a touching story, written with heart and compassion which I recommend to tweens and teens alike, especially those who love figure skating
Well-written, clean language, in-depth understanding of characters who kept their age appropriate responses, variety of plots clearly planned, surprising ending.
